Life Lessons from Drawing 101

This summer, I fulfilled a dream I’d had for years—I took a 5-week beginner drawing class at a local art museum. Every Saturday morning, I showed up with my sketchbook and an open mind and heart. I expected to learn how to draw, but I didn’t expect to learn so many life lessons along the way.
Start with a beginner’s mind.
Trying something new as an adult can feel scary. Out of the 12 students who started, only four of us finished the full five weeks. Why? It’s humbling to be new at something. But when we stay curious and ask for help, we grow. Being open to learning and feedback is powerful.
Let go of perfection.
Instead of trying to be “good” at drawing, I focused on being present. I spent more time observing than drawing. When I finally picked up my pencil, I just drew what I saw—without judging myself, focusing on the journey instead of the outcome.
Be bold and take risks.
During our final project, my teacher, Marlene, noticed I was being too cautious. She reminded me to be brave and use darker tones. I went for it—and suddenly my eggplant and scallions looked real enough to eat!
Find the joy.
When I relaxed and stopped overthinking, I entered a flow state. Time disappeared. I noticed little things—curves, shadows, highlights—that I usually miss in my busy life. It felt like the magic from my childhood when I would draw my dreams.
Celebrate progress—and have fun!
I chose an in-person class because I wanted to connect with others. We shared feedback, celebrated each other’s talents, and laughed a lot—especially when our drawings got a little “three sheets to the wind,” as our instructor liked to say.
Though class is over, our group still meets at local coffee shops to draw, connect, and encourage each other. We've embraced our inner artists and refer to ourselves as the “Coffee Artists” in our group text chat. I've learned so much from them already!
Taking this class reminded me that it’s never too late to try something new. Following your dreams brings joy, connection, and a mindset that helps you keep growing—on and off the page.
